The Most Expensive Works of Art in the World
The most expensive painting in the world is Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci, which was sold at Christie’s auction house in 2017 for over $450 million. But there are many other pieces of art, whose prices go through the roof. In this article, I would like to introduce you to some of them.
It is not only the price of art that makes people’s jaws drop, but also the diversity of world-famous artists from the most diverse epochs and styles. Some of the big names include Renoir, Van Gogh, Klimt, Picasso, and Pollock with Warhol, and Lichtenstein.
Salvator Mundi by Leonardo Da Vinci
Salvator Mundi is not only the most expensive painting in the world, but also the most controversial. Allegedly, according to experts in the Louvre, it was not entirely painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. There are a few problematic passages, which raise suspicion and questions. A large part of the painting is said to had been done by either of his two pupils, Luini or Boltraffio.
Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is also one of the most expensive art creations in the world. It was insured for $100 million in 1962, but now the sum corresponds to a current value of around $700 million. The artwork is a portrait, believed to be that of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Florentine cloth merchant Francesco del Giocondo.
The Card Players by Paul Cezanne
The Card Players, painted by Paul Cezanne in 1892-93, is a part of a series of five paintings. Most of these paintings are in museum collections, such as Musée D’Orsay in Paris and The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. In 2011, the artwork was sold to a private collector for $250 million. One estimates that the painting is worth around $269 million today. Cezanne did not paint imaginary faces in these pictures. The men on the canvas knew Cézanne personally, since they were workers at his family’s estate.
Number 17A by Jackson Pollock
Jackson Pollock, who died in New York in 1956, was known for his action painting and an interest in abstract expressionism. For a long time, his work No. 5 was considered the most expensive painting in the world when it was sold for $140 million. But now Salvador Mundi has taken the top spot instead. In the meantime, however, one of Pollock’s other paintings has proven to be even more valuable. The painting Number 17A was acquired by hedge fund manager Kenneth C. Griffin in September 2015 for the hefty sum of $200 million.
Les Femmes D’Alger by Pablo Picasso
After studying The Women of Algiers by Eugène Delacroix, Picasso painted 15 oil paintings and completed over 100 drawings in which he varied the arrangement of Delacroix’s figures. Les Femmes D’Alger (Version ‘O’) by Pablo Picasso was sold for $179.3 million in 2015. Picasso was a very productive painter: the total number of his works is estimated at about 50,000.
